MINING DESIGN-BUILD OPPORTUNITIES

The majority of mining projects have a design-build component by the very nature of the rock mass. Most infrastructures that are constructed either underground or in an open pit has a "Field-Fit" component to it. At Boge-Boge, the symbiotic relationship between the engineering group and the construction team works most efficiently as a team with the potential constructor. The owner will have a complete set of As-Built drawings to work from when the job is completed and the system will be operational as the team ensures constructability, operability and maintainability have been incorporated into the final product.

In many mining projects, significant emphasis has been placed on the Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management (EPCM) style of contracts such that limitations on opportunities to fast-track construction and control the costs may be lost in the very nature of the contracting language. One key element in the process of design-build is concurrent engineering. In this context, the designers provide enough information to get the contractor building the infrastructure and some of the actual design is provided by the knowledgeable builders. This is in stark contrast to the standard, "stop and change order request", that is prevalent throughout the industry. In the design-build world, the collaboration between the engineer and the builder leads to a more efficient use of resources and provides the client with a superior product at the end of the project.
